I recently took part in a training on trauma therapy, and it got me thinking. We explored how our brains are wired to take in every bit of sensory information when something happens, the sights, sounds, smells, and even the feeling of the air.
But with trauma, these sensory pieces don't get processed properly. They get stuck.
The training taught us that by intentionally bringing these senses to the forefront in a safe, neutral space, we can help our brains begin to heal. This concept immediately reminded me of being in the water. For me, it's a place where I can't do anything else but simply exist. Being Deaf, I am not distracted by what I cannot hear, but all my other senses are on high alert, taking everything in.
Despite not seeing myself as a poet, the experience flowed out of me in a way I could only describe as a poem. I later turned it into a mini-movie, but the words themselves told the story.
This got me thinking... Can you describe the sensory information of a place where you feel safe?

It is just me. Me and the vast ocean.
Nothing, and everything. Holding me. I feel weightless.
The gentle, constant stroke of the water Soothing my soul
I rock side to side. Raising my arms overhead.
Catching the water and seeing the bubbles Deftly escaping my fingers
Power and strength as the water and I meet in embrace
I push, and roll All I see is dark blue. And me.
The long arm and hand stretched out Each stroke a move towards the unknown vast of ocean
I breathe
The land a steady rock The colours of beach huts dance across my eyes
The blue sky winks and reminds me: Right now, all my worries, there is nothing I can do.
But swim. All is well with the world.
It is just me. Me, and the vast ocean.
